Easing the squeeze: personal allowances or tax credits?

Commission on Living Standards Policy Series

In the run up to the Budget one of the central questions is what the next move will be on personal tax allowances as a tool in ‘ending austerity’ for those on low to middle incomes. The Resolution Foundation invites you to join us in a discussion of the relative merits of personal tax allowances and tax credits in supporting households most feeling the squeeze.  Chris Nicholson and Howard Reed will present new analysis, to be published in advance of the Budget, and Paul Johnson will respond on the broader role of the tax-benefit system in supporting this group and elements of the system that are ripe for reform.

This event is the first in a series of Resolution Foundation debates exploring solutions to the current living standards crisis, ahead of its Commission on Living Standards final report. Look out for invites to further seminars on inequality, debt and growth, and the future of the minimum wage and tax credits.
