Weathering the storm

How wealth shapes the ability of families to face this economic crisis

Individual wealth has grown significantly in recent decades, increasing from three- to nearly seven-times GDP since the 1980s. However, neither policy nor politics have kept pace with the scale of this change. The Resolution Foundation has joined the Standard Life Foundation to embark on the three-year project which audits wealth in the UK, helping us to better understand how this increase has occurred and what this means for families on low-to-middle incomes. As the country lives through an unprecedented economic crisis, who does and doesn’t have wealth to draw down on can make a huge difference to families’ current and future living standards.

How was wealth distributed across households on the eve of the current crisis? How had the situation of low-wealth families changed in the run up to this pandemic? And what impact has this crisis had on family balance sheets – from savings levels to debt?

The initial state of the nation audit will be published on 22 June. We are hosting an interactive webinar to discuss the role of wealth in how families are navigating the coronavirus crisis. Speakers include former Chancellor and Chair of Standard Life Foundation, Alistair Darling. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event.
