We are following a number of families living on a low to middle income across the UK to understand more about their household finances, their overall standard of living and their aspirations for the future.
Meet the families:
Nicola and Tony
Nicola and Tony live in Bristol with their two children, Finlay, 4 and Bobbie, 8 weeks.
Nicola: currently on maternity leave, will return to work full-time as a phlebotomist in January 2013
Tony: works in construction
Household income: approx. £28,000 including tax credits and child benefit
Danielle
Danielle lives in Walthamstow with her teenage children, Clarissa, aged 16 and Nick, aged 18
Danielle: works full-time for a housing association
Clarissa: studying for her A-levels and works part-time in Clarks
Nick: is on a training course at a lettings agency
Household income: £25,000 a year including housing benefit and tax credits
Claire and Dan
Claire and Dan live in Edwalton, Nottingham with their two daughters, 4 and 17
Claire: currently works part-time as a hairdresser around her youngest daughters nursery hours
Dan: works as an air conditioning engineer
Household income: approx. £30,000 including tax credits and child benefit
Home: Dan and Claire rent a property from Nottingham City Council
Sara and Mark
Sara and Mark live in Runcorn, Cheshire, with their three children, aged 7, 11 and 14
Sara: currently looking after their three children, doing voluntary work and trying to find a job as a teaching assistant
Mark: works part-time for a company as a virtual assistant
Household income: approx. £25,000 including tax credits, child benefit and other forms of support
Home: They rent their home in Runcorn, Cheshire. Their rent is currently covered by housing benefit
