Cash for Covid

Assessing the Spending Review and economic outlook

With economic uncertainty running high, the Chancellor has cancelled his Budget and scaled down his upcoming Spending Review. But he still faces big decisions about how much of this year’s exceptional spending will continue into next year to support the economy and tackle the virus. Add in fresh forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) and Wednesday 25th November will be a hugely significant moment for the Chancellor’s management of this crisis.

How has the UK’s economic outlook changed amid the gloom of a second wave, but with vaccines on the horizon? What does the future for public spending and the public finances look like post-Covid? And with Downing Street’s approach being reset after some high profile departures, what does the Spending Review tell us about the Government’s priorities – from ‘levelling up’ our economy to ‘levelling down’ our carbon footprint?

The Resolution Foundation is hosting an interactive webinar to debate and answer these questions the morning after the Spending Review. Following a presentation of key highlights from our overnight analysis of the Spending Review, we will hear from the new OBR Chair Richard Hughes and economist Linda Yueh. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event.
