Labour Party Conference

The State of Britain Debate | How To Tackle Health-Related Inactivity and Get Britain Working

Sunday 28th September, 6:30 – 7:30pm

Meeting Room 12, ACC Liverpool

Britain is in the midst of an economic health crisis. There has been a particularly sharp rise in health-related worklessness among young people, while ill health continues to keep a large number of adults in their 50s and 60s out of the labour market.  Alongside the obvious health implications, periods of long-term sickness can carry a heavy economic price for individuals by stunting their careers and suppressing their incomes. They can also put additional strain on the NHS and on the wider public finances too.

In this event, jointly hosted by the Resolution Foundation and The Health Foundation, we will discuss the causes and consequences of Britain’s economic health crisis, how the Government should respond, the proactive role employers need to play in supporting people with health conditions in work, and the prizes for tackling it – for individuals’ living standards, the state of the NHS and the wider economy.

Speakers: Stephen Kinnock MP, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Social Care | Dr Jennifer Dixon DBE, Chief Executive of the Health Foundation | Kate Bell, Assistant General Secretary to the TUC | Chris Smyth, Whitehall editor of The Times | Ruth Curtice, Chief Executive of the Resolution Foundation (Chair)

The Big Economy Debate | How To Reduce Emissions and Raise Living Standards?

Monday 29th September, 5.30 – 6.30pm

Meeting Room 12, ACC Liverpool

Kickstarting growth, raising living standards across the country and making Britain a clean energy superpower lie at the heart of the Government’s agenda.  Ministers argue these goals are complementary, while some critics say they are at odds with each other. The issues of GDP, household incomes and energy bills – a poignant marker of wider cost-of-living concerns – are right at the top of the political agenda in Britain.

In this event, jointly hosted by the Resolution Foundation and Octopus Energy, we will discuss how the government’s clean energy plans can help with the cost-of-living, how the wider net zero agenda can boost both growth and employment, and how Ministers can ensure that these benefits are shared across the country.

Speakers: Michael Shanks MP, Minister of State, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero | Dan Tomlinson MP, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury | Greg Jackson, Chief Executive of Octopus Energy, Kelly Beaver | Chief Executive of Ipsos UK

and Ireland | Ruth Curtice, Chief Executive of the Resolution Foundation (Chair)

Conservative Party Conference

How would the Conservatives get Britain working again?

Sunday 29th September, 1.30 – 3.00pm

Victoria Suite, The Midland Hotel

Britain enjoyed a mini jobs boom in the 2010s, but its performance in the 2020s has gone bust. The UK is shedding jobs, while economic inactivity and unemployment are rising – heaping pressure on the public finances and putting family living standards under strain. The UK needs to turn around its labour market performance if it wants to raise incomes and reboot young people’s careers.

At this event, we will be joined by Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Helen Whately to explore a Conservatives plan to get Britain working again – from reforming tax, welfare and regulatory systems and creating the right conditions for businesses to thrive.

Speakers: Helen Whately MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions | Giles Dilnot, Editor of ConservativeHome | Ruth Curtice, Chief Executive of the Resolution Foundation | Lord David Willetts, President of the Resolution Foundation (Chair)
