Action on youth unemployment is welcome, but the government must continue monitoring the situation carefully

Commenting on the newly announced package of support to tackle youth unemployment, Ruth Curtice, Chief Executive at the Resolution Foundation, said:

“Rising youth unemployment is what’s driving up the number of young people not in employment, education or training (NEET) in the UK today, so the Government is right to act now to try to get the numbers falling, rather than allow the crisis to grow.

“The expansion of the Jobs Guarantee scheme should help those in their early 20s who need help getting their careers up and running, and the rebalancing of apprenticeships towards young people is long overdue.

“These are welcome steps in the right direction, but the government should watch trends in youth unemployment closely to determine whether they are enough or whether more support is needed.”
