Britain’s new safety net

Where are the Government’s welfare reforms heading?

In late March, the Government announced a huge shake-up of disability and health-related benefits. It is now consulting on the details of many of the reforms included in the Pathways to Work Green Paper, while Parliament will soon vote on proposed changes to PIP. The reforms are hugely controversial – the Government claim they will stem the rise in benefit spending and support more people into work. Critics argue that they risk pushing vulnerable people into poverty.

What are the likely employment and poverty effects from the reforms? What do the proposed changes to PIP mean for current and future claimants? Have other critical reforms been lost in the fog of the initial announcement and Spring Statement? And what should policy makers do now to make the reforms a success?

The Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive webinar to debate and answer these questions. Following a presentation of new research analysing the employment and poverty effects of the Government’s proposed reforms, we will hear from leading experts on the challenges and opportunities from the reforms, and where clarity, closer scrutiny and change may be needed.

The event will be open for people to physically attend, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event via Slido.
