Red flags flying high? China’s uncertain future

China, under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, has grown in confidence on the world stage, winning influence and control especially across Africa and Asia, and increasingly in Europe.

But with the country facing major issues including high levels of debt, a middle-income trap, an aging population and institutional problems, is China’s authoritarian regime on a collision course with its economic aspirations? And with China’s fortunes having global repercussions, what mark will Xi’s activities leave on economies around the world?

At an event at its Westminster Headquarters, the Resolution Foundation hosted a discussion for George Magnus’ new book Red Flags, Why Xi’s China Is In Jeopardy. George was joined by Karen Ward, Chief Market Strategist for EMEA at J.P. Morgan, to discuss the findings of his book and China’s impact on economies far beyond its borders.

Speakers:

  • George Magnus, former Chief Economist at UBS and Associate at the China Centre, Oxford University
  • Karen Ward, Chief Market Strategist for EMEA at J.P. Morgan
  • Torsten Bell, Director of the Resolution Foundation
