Private pension wealth comprises the value of defined contribution pension pots, and the estimated equivalent value of defined benefit pension rights and annuitized pensions in payment. Changing life expectancies and interest rates have pushed up the valuation of these latter two types of pension over time, quite apart from any active increase in their value. We prefer to measure private pension wealth at a family unit level (singles or couples, plus any dependent children) and on a per-adult basis, as this best reflects the influence of family size. The data in this section shows how the real value of private pension wealth has changed since 2006-08, and how wealth compares across age groups and birth cohorts.
