Breakfast launch event: low earners through recession and recovery

The Foundation launched a major new project examining the impact of the recession and recovery on low earners. It followed the recent publication of Squeezed: the Low Earners Audit which details the challenges being faced by low earners.

At the event, chaired by David Freud, Shadow Minister for Welfare Reform, the Foundation set out the key findings from the Audit and described what our new project entails. In the discussion that followed comments touched upon the link between financial health and physical health, the link between family break down and financial health, the role of lenders in providing financial advice and intergenerational issues within work. The importance of private sector competition in low earner markets to reduce commodity and transactional costs was also raised, as was the issue of tax policies – the complexity and potential for redistribution.
