Britain is racked by pay divides – on gender, race, age and education status. But one of its starkest inequalities centres on geography, which is far more complex than Londoners earning more than everyone else. But while regional pay inequality is widely discussed, what drives these divides is less well understood. And that really matters if we’re to tackle these inequalities. How large are Britain’s place-based pay penalties, and where are the divides most stark? Are these penalties being driven by places, the firms that locate there, or the people themselves? And what can policymakers at national, city-region and local level do to address geographical pay inequalities in a way that boosts growth and living standards? The Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive webinar to debate and answer these questions. Following a presentation of the key highlights from groundbreaking new research – funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) – with that makes use of newly available Longitudinal Education Outcomes data, we will hear leading experts on the scale of Britain’s place-based pay divides, what’s causing them, and how they can be tackled. The event will be open for people to physically attend, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event via Slido.
