Governments and politicians can have a big effect on housing, for good and for ill. In this basket of indicators we track new housing supply; housing stock relative to the number of families; housing benefit coverage; and Help to Buy sales – all key issues in current housing policy debates.
Over three and a half million people receive housing benefit in the UK, and its generosity has been decreasing over recent years. The data in this section shows the proportion of people receiving housing benefit for whom it covered their full housing costs, by age group, income group and region of the UK.

Family units are defined as any single or couple adults and their dependent children. Housing costs are calculated net of housing benefit such that housing benefit is excluded from both income and housing costs. Income is net income after taxes have been deducted but before housing benefit is deducted. Income and housing costs assumed to be shared equally between family units within each household.
