Households across Britain have spent most of the 2020s stuck in a cost of living crunch. With inflation rising again, and the energy price cap forecast to rise to over £2,000 this winter, personal finance pressures continue to mount. The Chancellor will need to respond to these pressures in his Budget next month. But with the cost of servicing government debt also rising, his fiscal firepower is severely constrained. Who has been most affected by the cost of living crunch, and how have they coped? How does the experience of households in Britain compare to those in other countries? What is the cumulative cost of Covid and conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East on family budgets? And how can the Chancellor balance the need to provide cost of living support in the Budget next month, with the need to maintain fiscal discipline? The Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive webinar to debate and answer these questions. Following a presentation of the highlights from its deep dive into Britain’s cost of living crunch, supported by the Nuffield Foundation, we will hear from leading experts on where cost of living pressures are being felt most, and how the Chancellor should respond in his Budget next month. The event will be open for people to physically attend, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website.
