The economic outlook

Speech by the Governor of the Bank of England Andrew Bailey

The Covid-19 pandemic has sparked a truly global economic crisis, affecting families, firms and institutions throughout the world. The UK has been hard hit – experiencing the biggest economic contraction in over three centuries – but the fast pace of its vaccine roll-out means that the economy is expected to recover rapidly this year. The nature and path of that recovery, however, are highly uncertain.

What will the lasting impacts of the pandemic on the economy be? What role can monetary and macro-prudential policy play in supporting a strong and sustainable recovery?

To debate and answer these questions, the Resolution Foundation is hosting a major speech by the Governor of the Bank of England Andrew Bailey. Following his speech, we will hear from leading economist Hélène Rey before both take part in an interactive Q&A. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event.
